21st Dec 2012: Auld Lang Syne

Hi Folks,

Long time--no new post on the blog --so I thought maybe the year end is a good time for some musing --its a good time to ponder on the Inca / Mayan prediction about the 21st of Dec 2012 --when the world as we know it is predicted to end. Full stop. The End.

I have no intention to start a religious or a scientific discussion  on the subject. Suffice to say, if it ends, goodbye  --nice knowing you, folks, in this life and all that jazz. As the old Hindi film hit goes:

Choti si hai duniya, pehchani raaste hain,
Kabhi to milenge (in a different avatar)
kahin to milenge, to poochenge haal.

However, if Planet Earth, our home,  shrugs of this prediction like it did all others before (the last big one was when dinosaurs were wiped out) and if we are still around, then, guys, revive yourself once again ----and be more creative, live life more fully. and make the most of the journey ahead.

Seasons Greetings to each one of you !

Ita Sa Tukda Chand Ka!

Of all the States - Odisha!
INDIA: A 17-month-old baby boy was sold by a mother for Rs5,000 (Dh350) to pay for a new mobile phone, a pair of jeans, few new tops and cash cards for her phone.

In the extremely curious case in the Indian state of Odisha, the court directed the police to find the child and hand him over to social services since the mother was clearly not capable of handling the responsibility of a child, reports Hindustan Times.

The mother of the child ins 20 years old and a poor daily wage earner. She pleaded guilty and refused to take her son back when she was offered so by the police initially.

The Mighty Fall

Dear  Friends,
Sorry for not blogging for so long but was caught up with several commitments that left me panting at the end of the day. Now I am a bit free and promise to get back to blogging. I am delighted to inform you that my second book `The Mighty Fall' is ready for release at the hands of Rajdeep Sardesai and Medha Patkar on the occasion of the 5th Prakash Kardaley Memorial lecture being held in Pune on September 8. Following is the synopsis of the book which is priced at Rs.200 and would be available on flipkart.com Sepat 8 onward, cheers and warm rgds vinita

The Mighty Fall reflects the ongoing silent social revolution of citizen
empowerment and participatory governance sweeping across India, thanks to the
Right to Information Act (RTI), 2005.

Mirrored in this book are two sterling examples of how RTI proved to be mightier
than the mighty in power.

The outgoing President of India, Pratibha Patil, was caught in a whirlpool of
controversy over her post-retirement home in Pune. Information procured under
RTI revealed several irregularities, sparking nationwide media uproar. Despite
stiff initial resistance, the President had to finally give up the land.

Dow Chemicals, the giant multinational company, was allotted a whopping
100 acres of land in village Shinde Vasuli, Pune, ostensibly to set up a ‘research
centre’ at a throw-away price. RTI exposed that the company had been
given permission for ‘manufacture’ (and not ‘research’) without stringent
environmental clearance certificates as required. Unable to withstand the
escalating heat, Dow abandoned the plan and quit.

In both cases, the author’s journalistic writing forced the desired result as she
employed the RTI tool with great elan. This book provides an insight into the
chronology of those events.

Besides providing an overview of the RTI Act for common knowledge,
the book also highlights select cases where citizens have used RTI to
get their personal problems solved.

Read on, get empowered!

not proud to be an indian today

15th august has rolled around and the band playing in the school opposite my house seems muted. there is no blare of patriotic songs either and the mood is subdued. just yesterday i visited a friend who said-" this year i don't feel very patriotic and really don't want to hoist and salute the indian flag. our town is going nowhere and we will have finally lived a futile life, trying to make a difference and not succeeding. do we want our children to face this same sad future?" that set me thinking..after 66 years, have we finally woken up to the fact that today we , as a nation have nothing much left to celebrate? the last four years have been particularly desolate and distressing. each day unfolds news that shows up our leaders as scamsters at best, murderers, rapists and jailbirds at worst. laxman's comman man ( more so probably the common woman ) toils on regardless because earning roti, kapda alone and  keeping body and soul together takes up all the time. forget the makans, my friend - even the so-called upper class can't afford to build a small house ( as i am learning right now to my immense discomfiture!). why has a nation who stood up fearlessly to the tyranny of the emergency suddenly lost all political will? this land of milk and honey, so rich in it's natural resources is sliding into an economic, political , social and moral vacuum.
talent, in the form of our brainy youngsters is fleeing our shores. i just bade farewell to another of my daughter's friends who is leaving for the us and will definately not come back. it saddened me but looking at the present scenario, i couldn't help but wish her godspeed. i wanted to say - come back and work to make our country a better place - but the reality is sobering. what right do we have to ask our children to come back to a skewed education system which demeans their intelligence through reservation, a political system where each new cm/prez/ minister is worse than the prior one, all scamsters, murderers and rapists bent on frightening levels of degradation and pillage. where the system is crooked and wants to make you like it. where a catatonic pm is manipulated by a shrewd lady who lets him face the slings of outrage while making merry in the background and pushing her no-good progeny into our cabinet and ultimately down our throats.
is the inability to change fuelled by "the inertia of laziness or the resistance of fear"? can we get out of this morass of lethargy and " be the change you want to see"? i think all of need to look deep into ourselves and find the strength or else die trying.

Henry's article in Gulf Today about Rajesh Khanna

ROMANTIC INC
BY HENRY JACOB
July 19, 2012
The news of Rajesh Khanna’s death comes as a shock to millions of his fans. More so to a close family friend, who recounts an incident involving the actor when his family had gone to Bombay, as Mumbai was then known, for a wedding in 1971( Corrected  from oroiginal  ). It was a big entourage which had put up in a guest house – a huge bungalow with a sprawling ground – in Juhu. ( both  ours & Ali's fly  had been to attend our cousin Hilda's wedding)

Rajesh Khanna’s film Aradhana had just been released. The movie was a smash hit. During their stay there, someone spread the word that the actor was going to inaugurate a toy train at a park in Santa Cruz. The park was where a song from the film had been shot.

Without batting an eyelid, his starstruck mother ( Feroze aunty ), a very lively lady with an endearing sense of humour, with her children and some wedding guests dashed to the site of the action. A huge crowd had assembled at the park. The girls were shrieking, which grew louder as Khanna’s car approached. The crowd just went berserk. In the melee, his mother’s shoe went flying under the car. She started screaming, “My shoe, my shoe!” The star’s car then reversed, and his mother could then retrieve her shoe. But not before she had a close look at the actor seated inside. She was thrilled to bits.

His mother is no more – and so is the actor, who passed away on Sunday at his Bandra home on Wednesday.
There is no doubt that Rajesh Khanna was a classic charmer. He wowed generations with his scintillating smile, his style of dancing, and even the way he would shut his eyes while moving his head. Even his hairstyle was a rage. There were several youth in my town who aped it.

He was the incredible romantic. He had his own way of charming his heroines, be it Mumtaz, Sharmila Tagore or Asha Parekh. The manner of his crooning Mere sapnon ki rani to Sharmila Tagore in Aradhana, or targeting the actor Asha Parekh with his Yeh Jo Mohabbat Hai in Kati Patang, can’t be easily forgotten. He portrayed a variety of roles – as a convict (Ittefaq), a cancer patient (Anand), as a reforming truck driver (Dushman), as a lonely husband in Amar Prem, and even an adorable chef (Bawarchi). The way he tells ‘Babu Moshai’ to Amitabh Bachchan, who had not yet hit the pinnacle that time, in Anand is simply inimitable.

Aradhana also saw the sparkle of singer-actor Kishore Kumar, who delivered some classic humdingers with his playback voice.

An acquaintance recounts how he went to the premiere of one of the actor’s films, Prem Kahani, in Mumbai back in the ’70s. However, as luck would have it, he never got to see the actor, who apparently came in late after the screening of the movie began, but managed to get a brief glimpse of his silhouette when he exited before the film ended. He is happy with that.

Speaks volumes for the actor’s appeal. The star is gone, but Kaka’s (as he was affectionately known) charisma will remain for ever.

Whats my Name?

When I was born my parents with lot of pride named me Jhansi Lakshmi. Probably they were patriotic and loved the history of our country.  Being their  first child and that too a girl they wanted their daughter to be treated like a queen/princess.

When I was a toddler they said I was naughty and coincidentally the character Birju in the Movie Mother India played by Sunil Dutt which was released  at that time was naughty too. The movie being a big hit many naughty kids of that time, irrespective of being a boy or a girl were called birju. Slowly I was called bijju,  the distorted form of birju.

When I joined school I was very particular that I should not be called bijju, somehow I associated bijju being a boy's name and that too a boy who was naughty and mischievous.  From the time I joined school everyone called me Jhansi including family except my dad.

Till my relocation to Mumbai after my marriage no confusion. In Mumbai and other parts of India the name Jhansi is not as common as it is in Andhra. When I introduced myself as Jhansi people were little confused and said that it sounds more like a name of the place than the name of a person. So they decided to call me Lakshmi. So now I introduced myself as Jhansi Lakshmi instead of just Jhansi and left it to them to decide by what name they wished to call me. So initially half the people called me Jhansi and the other half Lakshmi. Now I was confused while responding to my name. Therefore I decided to introduce myself as Lakshmi. That is  the journey from just Jhansi to just Lakshmi.

When I was in California for a short time people preferred to call me Jhansi. The logic is its very easy to pronounce as it sounds like Nancy. Hahaha.

The ordeal does not end here.
I am Lokhmi when in Odisha
I am Lokkhhi when in Bengal
I am Lacchmi when in rural Andhra
I am lak-shha- mi in rural Maharashtra
I am Leeshmi in Kerala
My name is spelt, Laxmi, Luxmi and Lakshmi.

But I Love my name whether Jhansi or Lakshmi  or Jhansi Lakshmi,  as my parents have given it to me.
