hilarious no doubt but the first one is slightly insensitive besides being factually wrong.
the flogging that takes place is not about husband and wife and not in the whole of Afghanistan. these are more prevalent in taliban occupied tribal areas and are resorted to when the shariyat rules are broken. to taint the males of an entire country as wife floggers is to push humour to its limits, besides being factually incorrect.
i remember last month's controversial cartoon in US of a dead chimpanzee with the line , now who will sign the next bailout package. Now that was out and out racist comment against Barrack Obama. i was particularly impressed with the way he and his aides ignored the said cartoon.
It's easy to laugh at others, difficult to laugh at yourself but when an entire nation or a race or a religion is at the recieving end one needs to be very very sensitive.
I agree with your sentiments entirely, AB. But Karzai's new law legalizing rape within marriage has been such a shocker that it has left me dumbfounded. This cartoon ridicules not the general public but the Afghan powers-that-be, which to my mind are no better than the Taliban and therefore deserve no sympathy whatsoever.
Some of the best jokes, are the "tasteless" ones, and rips apart every caste, creed, nationality, religion, u name it. Google for "tasteless jokes".
I guess its in human nature!
Try this for size - "How do you know that a ______ (sub. nationality here) burglarized your house? Cos, the garbage has been eaten and your dog has had a good time".
AB, while I agree that one should be sensitive while making jokes, yet on the other hand, I must compliment the tolerance to such jokes in the western world.
Apart from the chimp joke you've narrated, I've seen several posters on the 'Baywatch' beach walls in L.A. saying 'Bush the Liar', depicting him as an ape. There was no public outrage, nor did anyone tear those. The Taliban and other jihaadis should take a lesson from such tolerance, instead of over-reacting to cartoons in Denmark.
I strongly disagree with you, Venu. Prophet Mohammed cannnot be equated with some living politician.
The Denmark incidence was sheer blasphemy. The likeness of the Prophet cannot and should never be depicted in any manner. The religious beliefs of all communities should be respected and not ridiculed by others.
Even a secular Muslim like me who has married a Catholic was horrified.
Oops, to be frank I don't remember the content of the Denmark comics---that was long ago. Wrong example! I was acutally referring to the religious intolerance of those jihaadis to something that is not Islamic---like destrying historical statues, denying education to girls, banning music of any kind, etc.
No probs, Venu. I had a feeling you had no clue about the real reason behind the Denmark uproar! As for your last para, yup, I agree with you totally...those pre-historic monsters are s#*&%ing up the whole world.
Tas, could you repeat the last sentence please? pre-historic monsters blah blah blah.......... Surprisingly what I get to see is some jumbled/garbled word in between a sentence!

I seriously think the tapes that are being viewed across the globe are doctored!
Hi Tas....
Sorry I'm late. My husband needed a good reason for my Blogging so that I could escape the Flogging...hahahaha!
Enjoyed both!
The Yanks have a good sense of humour. These cartoons have been making me laugh since I was a kid.Comics were a precious commodity in our schools then
Nargis, again your comment was so cute that I fell off my chair laughing!
Omigosh, it looks like computer engineers in Afghanistan and Pak will start looking for flog files instead of log files.
Good pics, Tas.
