Sounds a bit strange but the first blogger to get off the blocks in 2008 as well as the person to whom it was intended for never re-appeared in the blog for the entire year.
On the 3rd of January 2008, Ratna (along with Abhiram, Abhilasha, Anshu and Kritika ) set the ball rolling for the year by wishing Henry and Dorothy all the best for their married life. It elicited 3 comments. 23 days later Stanely suggested that “Henry was suffering from the after effects of marriage after his long flirtation with bachelordom”…. Henry is yet to respond.
Believe me this was the only activity for the entire month.
February was slightly, just about slightly better, with five entries from two NRI’s based out of Dubai and Canada. Four of them were from Faiyaz confirming his talent for playing with words wrapped with a contagious sense of humour. Three of them did not receive a single comment. Tasneem revealed her compassionate side by asking everyone to log on to "freerice.com" to feed the hungry and poor of the world. In all there were 10 comments and again believe it or not all the ten of them were shared between Tasneem and Faiyaz. They were just the two of them in the blog land for the entire month and the classmates almost managed to have a quarrel (presumably) over the choice of words. What a lonely and forlorn place this blog is.
March was an action replay of February witnessing five blogs. Three were from the valiant Faiyaz and one each came from Alpana and Venu. People were equally miserly about comments totalling 8 for the month.
April saw a total of seven entries and “By-now-you-should-guess-who” blogged five of them. The two V’s Vimal and Vinita make their presence felt with a blog each. Vinita proudly announced that she had become a grandmother opening the floodgates of comments (19). Faiyaz blogged pictures of our school but the comments were again lukewarm. However there was an improvement in the feedbacks with 39 comments made during the month.
The month of May again saw seven blogs. “By-now-you-should-guess-who” had four of them with Vinita, Naresh and Stanely scoring singles. Vinita blogged her letter to Amitabh Bachchan, Stanely recommended books written by Khaled Hosseini while Naresh wanted Vims to change his pix (that pops up in the comments section) which reminded him of Marlon Brando. In all there were only 14 comments during the month.
Faiyaz raised his sense of humour to a new level with creative entries: “Corn Apna Corn Paraya” and “Maple pal do pal ka shaayar hoon”- both standouts for me. It’s really a sad commentary on the bloggers of that time that both got 0 comments.
In June things turned for the worse. There were five entries with “By-now-you-should-guess-who” making three of them with Vims and Naresh coming up with one each. Naresh’s mellifluous flow of high octane verbosity was on display as he narrated his meeting with Alpana and then went on to explain (can I call it the raison-d-etre) the physical distance between them in the pix!! There were 30 comments in all.
The going till now was lukewarm but July was a complete disaster. Just two blogs and both from “By-now-you-should-guess-who.” He blogged a cat asking for the “catreenas” to re-appear. Sarita and Alpana promptly appeared on the blog. Faiyaz had finally cracked the Da Vinci code. Moral of the story: If you want ladies in the blog compare them to Katreena Kaif!! In all there were 7 comments during the month.
Desperate times call for desperate measures.
August therefore rightly began with our school prayer (O father thou art in heaven..) blogged by Vims on the 10th of August. His prayers were answered and the blog witnessed a U- turn. There were 19 blogs in this month and a total of 134 comments! In the history of this blog it was the first century of comments made in a calendar month.
Yours truly joined the blog and opened the flood-gates of nostalgia. It was the literary version of precision bombing. Target the past, target the times that one would never like to forget, target childhood emotions and launch missiles after missiles on that bastion till the bloggers wake up. And sure it worked!!
Come September and the tune was really upbeat. It was Rock ‘n’ roll time in APOSCAFORVIMAL. August was great but September proved to be the greatest. There were 75 blogs! YES 75 BLOGS!!!!!!!! Photographs from the past were blogged, nostalgia overflowed, Omkar, Bani and Reena joined in. Nargis made her second coming. Sentiments were running high. A re-union was called for. All this evoked a staggering 631 comments.
October saw a marginal dip with 60 blogs and 557 comments. Dr. Santa and the young and handsome Kausty joined the blog. Free passes for the Boney-M show were on offer! There was a pix of Sheila too, blogged by Vims and someone said Zeenie baby is back. Reena too promised 30 pictures- one for each year spent out of St. Vincent's. But it was just a false dawn.
November saw Mumbai being attacked with guns and grenades. There were 41 blogs triggering 372 comments. The blog on “The Call of Cuttack” made history of sorts with 53 comments and an “angry” Hilu promising a rebuttal. Despite this mock fight, signs of ennui and lack of enthusiasm could be detected.
Recession well and truly set in during December and the decline continued with 32 blogs and 170 comments. Vims and yours truly were making desperate calls to each other. I tried my hand in photo-journalism while Vims blamed it all on the Yule tide spirit which had sent all and sundry to the hibernation mode.
What a year it was for me personally. Met friends like Vims, Stanely, Sarita, Debashis, Nargis and Shankar. Spoke to Miss Shamim, Sister Rosalie, Naresh, Venu, Aashu !!!!!!!!, Faiyaz and Henry.
What then were the highlights of the blog for me? Apart from my own emotional journey into the past there were quite a few moments I shall always cherish:
# Stanely slipping in the innocuous line: “The gorgeous Purnima Panda whom I used to call on platonically at Stella Maris.”(Comment made on August, 17). We are lucky Sigmund Freud is not part of this blog!!
# Naresh blogging a pix where I saw myself standing next to my first crush (September, 8)
# Getting the honorary title of the “Pebble thrower” courtesy Stanely (October, 20)
# Reading with glee posts from Alps delivered in breathless style and from Ashu with all the exclamation marks, commas, semi-colons etc.
#Nargis sharing her “dream” and spitting fire for her right not to vote.
#Tasneem spreading the sweetness with Chenna Podo…
#Vishnu informing us all that the statue of St. Vincents has been removed (September, 21)
#And above all the solitary maple leaf of Faiyaz and its title, “Maple Do Pal Ka Shaayar Hoon”(May, 24). Truly symbolic of the times in which we live.
I wonder what 2009 holds for the denizens of this blog. Will we all hide behind the convenient excuse of “I was busy” or will we do better than the 259 blogs and the 1975 comments we managed in 2008?
Shall we just better the numbers or better the cozy warmth and mellow sunshine of nostalgia that we snuggled into last year?
Will we put in the efforts ourselves or shall we all wait for a Godot?
Only time will tell………….
P.S.
Hey guys you may be all busier than Barrack Obama but surely the hours and hours of research deserves your comments….. Aakhaa bhai log, ladeeeze log fultooch respond karney ka... Boley toe kya!!

AB, I just KNEW you had something up your sleeve!
Great analysis that...
I only hope 2009 opens more floodgates as 2008 did with your arrival into the APSCOFORVIMAL scene.
Wow tas! your reaction time was 28 minutes to be precise!!
gosh Arun,
that hit the spot.
I have included this as my silent New Years resolution for 2009.
all that research. you are a friend among friends.
RT 28 mins?
Wow! Not bad for someone approaching her 50s!!
Actually I'm totally "vela" here.
Reena,
the resolution,I hope includes blogging your pix besides writing. we need new perspectives in '09 not the same old bloggers with the same old topics eliciting the same old comments. u can always write a few things about your life and times, about Indians in US, the joys of the first world the problems of adjusting in US etc. etc. try becoming the Jhumpa Lahiri of the Blog. All the very best.
Blog for sake of blogging is no kinda blog.
Actually I do like the crests and troughs.
Arun, it goes without saying that your presence in this blog has really rescued it from sliding into oblivion! Congrats for that.
By the way, since you seem to have a keen eye for statistical information, can you please update us with data for the preceding 2 years also :)
As usual Venu has come up with a great piece......but seems like Venu has put him on to more work and are we to expect a couple more statiscal blogs soon ?
Omkar,
you are right one should blog only if its Dil sey. it is not the numbers but the warmth of nostalgia that is important.
Crests and troughs.. hummm
Venu,
kaam pey laga dala. Ok one day I shall do it. anything karega for the blog.need some time though..
Kausty,
on the samaj blog i had requested you something. if not the book review then at least some reminescences/ personal annecdotes of that great man
Hi Arun ,
your analysis of the Year That Was , not only reflects painstaking data study but also a disciplined mind with a great degree of committment to a cause---even the resolute Reena had to break her SILENCE....your postings are something everyone looks out for!!!Keep the gr8 work going!!!!
my first story...after a 35-year vacuum of having had no contact or seen or heard of anyone (you get the idea), I have been overwhelmed and was not able to jump right in. (especially as Jhumpa Lahri). I think I needed some continuity and am starting to feel that now.
Thanks so much for creating this space where our past still lives on. I am fortunate to have been a part of such an amazing group of friends at SVC and more amazed at how we have come together. I'm looking forward to meeting you all at the reunion or otherwise when I visit India this September and of course to many blogging stories.
All will be fine in 2009 (courtesy of Victor, my brother-in-law).
Spoke to Dina just now. Faiyaz was busy in Dubai with his family over the Christmas vacs. Chalo maaf kar diya.
Faiyaz, we know you are free now. Dina said you had a get together with Henry n Amitabh yesterday.
Apna computer kholo aur blogging shuruu kardo!
tasneem maaf karney mein thodi jaldi baazi naheen kar rahee ho? yeh kaun sa excuse hey bhai. family aa gayee toe blog kee family ko bhool gaye.
once you come back from Canada and be with your family will you too ignore the blog? Let faiyaz come back we will have a battle royal. He can't hook us on a daily deit of humour and then disappear like this.
I'm with you, AB!
Fai, that was just not fair.
Sarita,
"disciplined mind with a great degree of commitment"- i will take that. I was almost getting an impression that instead of a writer i probably have a better future as a statistician!!
Reena,
Ghoom phir key sau baat ki ek baat blog your pictures and blog some annecdotes. the last line however went over my head.
tas,
thanx for the support. we need to have a joint front against Faiyaz's uncanny punning skills.
Arun bhai
Obviously the catalyst behind all this is our ' common cause' for an energetic 'tomorrow ' . The enervating work definitely needs a bracing up, exhilarating, invigorating and lilting ' energy drink '
Cheers ' Lage raho Arun Bhai '
Naresh, I love your attitude.
Way to go, boy!!
Naresh,
great to see you in the blog.
feels greater to know that you acknowldege this blog as one written for a common cause.
but felt greatest to go thru your high octane english!!!! Thou art unique sir.
Hope to see you back in full form in the first week of Feb. Always remember that the wheels of fortune will turneth over. Cheers.
What a review AB!!!!!! hats off man!! Reena ko bhi jaga diya...
Reena: Photu kidhar?? Promise a post a week now onwards... Did not follow the last line though...
Venu: "Can you please update us..." That was a good one!
Lage raho friends! Blog karte raho!
Vims,
maine naheen jagaya, actually reena has made a new year resolution to blog. i hope like all new year resolutions this one does not break in January itself.
it's a line for a better 2009 (hmmm...another rhyme). We were in Montreal for New Years Eve with my sister and families where I heard him first use that phrase and thought it was cute the way it rhymed.
Now would be a good time to introduce the Montreal trip crowd.
Ron (my husband)
Ritu(my sister)
Victor(Ritu's husband)
Arjun(my nephew)
Shivani(my niece)
We spend a lot of time together so they will be part of my stories.
Arun, wow, man, that was a great summing up of the year that was --and for me as well, it was great meeting all of you. But the amazing thing that Vimal has begun is --that no matter wherever you are or how busy you maybe, you know there is still a small part of India that is forever SVC (AND THAT IS APOSTCARDFROMVIMAL)--with apologies to Rupert Brooke.
Venue, your request for an update requesting for statistical data reminds of an actual memo that I had seen in my SAIL days, which went something like this:
Sub: Request for data for previous two years blah blah
"Dear Sir,
With reference to your above, placed herein is my below...."
Amitabh, lovely hearing from you, after a nice adda at your place, only forty odd years ago...
Tasneem -- hats off to you for your prodigious output of comments
Alpana and Aashu --great innings last year --more expected from you --esp your regular detailed plans for a reunion....
Vimal, only Vimal -- thanks for being the "youtube" of svc-ians --a platform of verbal-videos on constant display
And Faiyaz, kahan ho bhai, mitna zaandi, gajre dil and offcial pun-dit of the blog...
Zindagi mizgara --Life goes on............

Shivani ka photu zaldi blog karo!!
Hi Reena,
cummon man, we are now terribly low on patience--- don't try it any longer--end the suspense and stage an ENTRY!!!!
hi stan,
good to hear from you. your track record during the last month is probably just marginally better than faiyaz. this probably is your first comment after almost a month... and now i have to find out something about rupert brooke!!
sarita,
u are right about reena. waiting for her to blog is almost like waiting for Godot.
arun,
mujhe baksho yaar!
come on jhumpa reena lahiri you can do it!!!!
Arun Tas and Aash
Thanks for all the pep talk. I appreciate your stoicism in face of individual problems also.
Naresh, glad you are back to the blog.
Feb is very close now.
hi naresh,
i narrowly missed you all in bangalore. i came from bellary around 6 am and had a 9.30 flight to mumbai. with the new airport being almost 30 kms from the city there was no chance. i remember last time u were in mumbai i was out. let's see how many times more we miss each other before we get to meet. take care.
