Art Deco
Simple as it may seem but this window design that belongs to an old mill in Mumbai is based on the Art Deco architectural style that took shape around 1925 in France. It was around 1930s that this form arrived in Mumbai. Even now you will find several landmark buildings in Mumbai including movie theatres that adopted this style – not just windows but the entire building.
The Art Deco style is based on geometrical shapes, clean lines and symmetry. While I hardly have any knowledge about various forms of architecture, these buildings in Mumbai always fascinate me coz though each one has a signature of its own there is this unique design element that binds them together…
The design element, in its earlier traditional form, was so compelling that it inspired jewelry, furniture, artifacts and even some paintings were based on them…
In fact, if I jog my memory, I can recall having seen this style across India (in old houses and that too in smaller towns…) Google ‘Art Deco’ and you will very much agree with me. Unfortunately with new buildings replacing the old ones, this style in India will not survive for long…

The 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes first gave rise to the term.
Empire State Building and Radio City Music Hall in New York are great examples.
And, not to forget, the art deco look of Vimal Parmar in the Outdoors Magazine Cover--see post today.
