Memories of Khallikote College: From the safety of the gated community at SVC to the open grounds of Khallikote college was a dreaded transition for me in 1978.
I took up Intermediate Scince with Geology 4th Optional, which most aspiring Engineers would do in those days. The first geology class - strange looks from the staff and students as they had never before had a female student in the Dept and did not know how to deal with one. The Prof asked "Geology class re kahinki asicha? pahada chadi pariba?"
I got used to being called "Jhia".
Though I never needed to climb the real pahadas, I have managed to scale some pretty big mountains in the academic and professional life. The staff at the Geology Dept were instrumental in encouraging me to do the best inspite of my being a visible minority.
Though Khallikote College had its share of strikes and agitations the love and affection of the faculty and students and the fun we had there is unforgetable.Hope wiser counsel prevails.
Hi Sushil. It was a one day fleeting visit. twenty years after my dad's retirement there was still some paperwork that had to be done at khalikote college!!!!
Hi Sujata, yes he used to teach Hindi. He retired from Ravenshaw in 1990. Parents stay in Dehradun and spend around four months in Mumabi and Bhubaneshwar where my elder brother resides.
Hi Arun- I think congratulations are due to your Dad and also my uncle(my namesake) and all others who stuck to their guns and won the case.Very sad that Swamimastergaru isn't there to savour the victory. I guess that was the reason for your trip? Hope my info is correct?
That's right. Late Mr. NN Swamy's last telephone call to my dad came a few months before he left for his heavenly abode. When my dad used to enquire about his health he always used to say "Don't worry I will not die before taking my money." Well he surely underestimated the power of red tapism.
It is so nostalgic to see the college (even if it is burning). Although I did not go to Khallikote, my older sister did and my Dad taught chemistry there. He was the RCM PG Hostel warden and we lived there for couple years before we left BAM for Trichy!
Arun, if you've read Labour Law Journals, there is a landmark case filed by Late NN Swamy in the Supreme Court---it was in the mid-80s. It read 'NN Swamy Vs the State of Orissa' It was related to the nationalisation of Khallikote College and reckoning past service in that college as govt service.

Hi Arun, Did your dad teach at the college? And was it Hindi he taught or some other subject?
