This is not a film review. Also, I am not here to play the Devil’s advocate, whoever the Devil may be in this case :-} Let’s just say I have a vested interest in the success of this film. Not because I am a great fan of SRK but because Zarina Wahab who is making her comeback on screen after ages, happens to be my second cousin ;-}. Anyway, by now almost everyone has spoken out loud- the politicians, the media. All the King’s forces and all the Sena’s men have also voiced their thoughts- in words or in deeds. I just thought it appropriate to give a chance for the real victim to speak out. Pasted below is a picture of Mr. Kaan. Over to the interview....
(Pic taken from the net)
Reporter: Excuse me. I am from the Times of India. What is your name Mr.Kaan?
Kaan: My name is Kaan!
R: Oof….Yeh sun sun ke toh mere bhi kaan pak gaye! Anyway, now that everyone is talking about you, how do you feel? Aapko kaisa lagta hai?
K: Hmmm….Kaisa lagta hai? That’s such a profound question. Let me think…..
R: No, you cannot think. You are a Kaan. You can only hear.
K: But I can speak. Right? Or will I be misquoted or misjudged or misunderstood?
R: Don't worry, we'll give you some ear plugs. That should be enough to protect you.
K: Good! Can I answer in poetry?
R: Verse is absolutely fine. But no sporting comments please. So shoot……!!
K: The name of my poem is AKA…also known as Aman Ki Aasha.
Once upon a long, long time
I was full of pride for Me
For not only could I pledge to Hear
I could Taste, Touch, Smell and See
‘Pride always comes before a fall’
The sensible others warned me
But I was vain for I felt like a King
In my very own territory
I learnt to nibble at the flavours of life
Through the tongue of my acoustic soul
I learnt to view life’s charming sights
When my eardrums took a stroll
In the whiff of silence I got to sniff
A sense of peace so calm
From the audible melodies of nature’s lap
I picked out a soothing balm
There was music in my aural world
When the church bells tolled at home
I sensed serenity in a muezzins call
And in the Unstruck Sounds of Aum
But harmonious tunes are out of trend
As the mutiny in Man flares
And a rumbling of a political thunder
Is the latest din that blares
In my tranquil casing of a tender world
Are raucous shrieks that boom
My echoing spirits feel deadened and numb
In Man’s cold sepulchral tomb
Twice upon the very recent times
When I’ve put my foot in my beak
I found I could juggle with my senses five
But a Kaan should hear…not speak!
Moral of the Story :
Whether in Holly or Bolly or any other Wood
Talking ears are weird and seldom understood
AK47’s can only manage to put you behind bars
But the pellets of innocuous words can initiate wars
So if you live in the East, West, North or the South
You can even shoot with your cameras. But not with your mouth!!

Such reams of prose doth thou bestow on a body part of a Bollywood superstar,
My name is Kaan or yes, it is eez Khan, does it matter ?
Why should the Muse of the blog meddle with box-office marketing strategies,
for strange are the ways of the Bollywood Badshahs,
who, promote a film and yet save a dying tiger (not 1411 of them, but that roars now and then in urban Mumbai),
let them strut on the stage they inhabit, sans merci, sans teeth, sans souci......
Nargis,
Hmmm, not an SRK fan at all, and the leading lady Kajol, bores me to death. But I am actually a fan of Zarina Wahab, so I guess will have to see the movie.
Speaking of Zarina being your second cousin, reminds me of something that mom used to say, and on more than one occaison too - that Waheeda Rehman is also a relative of "missusali" (that's how my mom referred to your mom ;-) ). Furthermore, my mom used to add that Waheedaji actually visited Berhampur (before she became famous in C.I.D). Here is the kicker - that she used my mom's dressing table to get ready (por que, I don't rmbr.)
Now, I have never ever till now, tried to verify the authenticity of this trivia. Any other incident that might add credulence to my mom's claim? ;-)
Knowing my mom's family from Cuttack (yes Arun), they had a filmi bent, a little more than usual. Another incident was that Chandrasekhar (Govinda's dad?) was a guest at my Aja's house. Of course, I might have been quick to add "who gives a hoot to Chandrasekhar"? Kidding!
LOL Stan!!
Hilu......donno the authenticity of that statement but I remember a kid watching with awe when Waheedaji was putting make up.... but as far as I can remember it was on our dressing table..hahaha
Maybe when she gave her stage performance she used your house as a greenroom....:-{}
Too good Nargis, now I know where Zarina Wahab got her looks from, :)))
Nargis, thoroughly enjoyed the post as well as the comments of Sir Stan and Hilu.
Saw MNIK yesterday. Except for your cousin everything was average (and I am being kind). Even she gets eliminated very early on so that the entire focus is on the hero and his antics.
Tried a lot of things to get female attention during the seventies and eighties never knew that behaving like a moron and mouthing intellectual lines like, "Yellow yellow dirty fellow" or "Liar, liar, your bums are on fire" could be the clincher.
Two people who should never this film: Dustin Hoffman and ofcourse Barrack Obama.
Faiyaz and I met Waheeda Rehman, who let us into the house after we mentioned the magic word:Berhampur, and Feroz Ali and Iqbalbhai....
Fiayaz, you will recall how we made Waheeda explain to us in detail how to proceed to Juhu from Pali Hill --just to hear say it was such an expereince--and this, just during the Guide film era ...
Arun,
Yes, I think u must be kind. Name 1 decent SRK movie, seriously! And if someone does, how does it compare to the top 20 of AB or Dillip Kumar or even Rajendra Kumar or a few of Amir Khan's.
Nargis,
Yes, the "green room" rings a faint bell. Now, there must have been a performance somewhere - its either Ganjam Kala Parishad or that place down the street from your house, away from our house, where we used to have the SVC Public Day (of the Children's Day, Parents Day triage), aaaargh, name slips my mind. Anyways, my mom had said something about the dressing table of hers having to be transferred, forth and back.
Feel like Vimal & Naresh (er, Sherlock H. & Dr. Watson, not necessarily respectively), trying to figure this out ;-)
I for one would not agree - MNIK has a strong social message.
There are Two Types of People who exist - The Good and the Bad!!!
(Surprisingly - No Ugly)
Divide is what we create in every sphere!
I guess that's Ugly
Stanley, I distinctly remember our Meeting with Waheeda Rehman Aunty at Nepean Sea Road close to some Flora Fountain - cannot recall....
We went along with Mummy,Nigar and you - We had fun didn't we?
Sam's incident on the eve - Who can forget that? Hilarious!!.
I am not a great fan of SRK like my wife and neither have I seen MNIK but the mention of Waheeda Rehman made me sit up! I would rate her as probably the most beautiful woman to grace the filmworld. Zarina was not far behind. BTW I think they are from Rajamundry/Vijayawada as both started their careers in Telugu films How about an intro Nargis/Faiyaz?
Thanks guys!! No individual replies because guess what? When I wrote about the Kaan I think the Aankh got angry!! And now I have Conjunctivitis :-{ So no blogging for sometime....*sigh*
Taking any other actors' name alongside Dilip Kumar would be sacrilege.
The reason i admire srk is because he happens to be a common person without any filmi links (in bollywood these days heroes are either born in juhu or bandra and invariably children of industry wallas). One has to be a great fighter to make a place in this family & connection driven industry. In this life I (and most of his critics) will not achieve even one hundreth of his name, fame and wealth.
There is no doubt that there is a message in the film. The only problem was the way in which it was delivered and the depth (or lack of it)of research work to make it authentic like Rainman/Beautiful Mind. Maybe I am being harsh but comparisons to Dustin Hoffman become inevitable especially when you are dealing with a delicate subject like Asperger's Syndrome.
The heroine seemed to be still in the sets of dil wale dulhaniya... and shows no understanding of the disease her hero suffers from. srk devoid of his usual box office mannersims seemed like an indian batsman on a green top wicket.
What was indeed over-the-top (and I am being kind) was the presence of a village in the US where the government does not reach with flood relief but our guy with an Asperger's Syndrome, a bunch of college students and press manages to be there - most probably in a bus. I am sure in the age of globalization our American friends wouldn't mind a bit of Indianization to the turn of events.
Thanks are due to Karan Johar for not bringing in a song sequence during the reief work. This really would have brought me to tears. He had to be satisfied with the hum honge kamyab number. Now that's creativity.
This film should still be seen. Bollywood produces so much of crap that MNIK becomes a colossus in comparison.
Arun,
Agree except on sacrilege - alongside AB not Dilip Kumar (single ell hmmm?). Anyways, that's a personal choice. They are both greats, and I hate debates between greats.
SRK, is a fine young man, nothing personal (how can that be even, eh?), its just that his acting, his choice(?) of movies, the directors he gets to work with, leaves much to be desired.
Kaajol - she's ok at best. She's been given great roles. Now lets not even talk about Waheeda Rehman, but rather take a reasonably regular actress like Raveena Tandon. When given good roles, she (Raveena) seems to grab it with both hands and delivers.
Unfortunately, SRK and Kaajol, don't seem to get it (I dunno if they care), and while successful, it exposes their lack of ability to be counted alongside the greats.
Oh oh,
Speedy recovery Nargis. Next, naak?
Hilu,
Point well taken. Both AB (and I don't mean Arun Bhatt!!!) and DK are truly great actors. Maybe the word sacrilige was a bit over the top. But that's what happens when we passionately discuss bollywood.
