FF to 1969, my Std. III, domesticating the boys

1967 - nothing particularly comes to mind save for the fact that our class Miss had hand-made beautiful Christmas cards for each one of us students, before the winter break. Mine is in an almirah, at home in BAM. A dark tall lady with kinda curly hair.

1968 - Betty Taylor our class Miss. Perhaps the only full blooded Miss of English origin.
With more folds in the grey matter, images of Sarita, Reena, Nigar, Sheila, Sushma, Vimal, Sohail, Josephine (wonder why we called her Jespin), Khwaja, Joseph, Kevin (Dr. O'Brian's son), Neelkantha, Harjinder... get clearer. Of course Bhabani and Lalaji (Swaraj Medical Hall, ring a bell?) were already etched ;-)

1969 - An incident, perhaps the only one of its kind in SVC. So it was a rainy day. And as always a major part of the "interval" was used for games. Rmbr. the game, Kings? Mark a circle on the mud, put your right foot on the line and bounce a ball, and one guy gets out? Anyways, that day it really got out of hand, downright brutal, and the guys who were getting "out" very vengefully hitting the ball at the remaining ones and at the end, 3 had to go to the infirmary, and those that didn't had mud stained marks on the back of our shirts covering up bruised skin (i don't think even the King was spared).
Long story short - Sister Rosalie noticed; no games for our class boys for 1 month, and instead we would do "sewing". Yes, sewing. And we did (from Bhabani to Vishnu), grudgingly of course. In the midst of that a wonderful thing happened - Class Miss Ruth Garreth! Every game period, that we boys stayed behind and sewed, she would tell us a story (one was about Uroshima Taro), and a story-teller she was. By the time the curfew was lifted, we missed her stories, at least for a few days, I think.

Correct me If i am wrong, Swaraj Medical Hall was right in front of the GPO Main Entrance - General Post Office in Barracks near the Bus Stop where the vendors used to sell 'MUA' the only place in the WORLD!

Good memory Hilu, Sohail was my Cousin and is no longer there, he passed away 15 years back. Poor Chap - Ill Health!

Harjinder Kaur or Harjinder Singh?

Sew a needle pulling Thread?
So you guys learnt how to sew!

I can imagine Bhabani sew!

I learnt cross stitch embroidery in SVC. The reverse side could never be as neat as some of the other girls'... however much I tried.

Tasneem,
Reverse side? Try asking Bhabani/Vishnu and Omkar(Hilu). Perhaps they could help!

Yes, after their lesson in domesticity, I'm sure they will be able to teach me a lesson or two.

Tas,

Maybe "sewing" is too strong a word/skill, what we did was technically needlework (of course we had to thread the needle). The fabric(?) we chose was simpler than what the girls chose. This is getting hard for me explain now ;-) The fabric had small double threaded traps thru which one could run the needle w/o any part of it appearing on the reverse side (how else could we boys do anything anyways!). I think my first pattern was the sun rising (yellow colored thread) in between 2 hills (brown), the basic 101 picture from KG art class. Later added some trees and Miss Garreth, did a couple of birds (black thread), as the nimbleness of my fingers at least, had reached its physical limits ;-)

Vimal,
Speak up. If u can rmrbr. Banhi Laha (what an exhotic name), u do rmbr. this.

Fai,
Harjinder Singh, Kulvinder Kaur's brother.

Hilu, I'm sure what you seem to be referring to is Tapestry!

Tasneem said...

Omkar,
That was cross stitch. The cloth you are referring to was matti cloth.

Mattiro Monisho!

Ms.Ruth Garreth and Ms.Betty Taylor. Photographs? No. Signature?probably... lemme check!
Yes Omkar i remember our embroidery class. We had to get that cloth that would take in cross-stitch but Aslam got a different type of cloth so we all had to get something similar. And you remember what design we made? A big diamond. Some one had multi coloured thread - probably Aslam again - and his work was by far the best!

Sohail was a good friend... miss him.
Harjindar... A few months back, Bhabani called. Said Hi and passed on the phone to Jinder. I had a great chat with both of them.

Bhabani and Harjinder - Friends in a common cause - Petrol pumps !!!

Aslam, oh yes. Had sparkling eyes.

And out pops another name - Jagdish. Rmbr? No one could beat him in the one-legged race.

Rope in Reena and Bhabani.

Hilu.........OMG..just imagining you guys doing needle work has me in splits. If you still have that piece of cross stitch I suggest you frame and hang it on the wall. In case anyone lavishes praises on the Dandiya Queen for her efforts you'll have a different story to tell....hahahahaha!

Hilu Tas,

Is Tapestry an Oriya/Sanskrit word?
I suppose so, It is associated with what women (stree) do and not Purush!
