Berhampur has an average literacy rate of 74%, higher than the national average of 59.5%.
Used to be 100 % - Brain Drain I guess

Lifestyle of the people was laid back, is laid back and perhaps will be!
Aha!!

Gee, whiz, gosh, darn!

Wish I had this in my arsenal while facing up to my Katki cousins, before BD (brain drain) ;-)

Some other chides -

2. Tumara only 3 ta cinema hall. SSVT re khali Telenga movie chalay. Grand re AC aau Suraj re push back seats.

Am sure Arun can add a few more here.

My retorts, u may find it handy -

1. Berhampur re Univ. achi, Medical College bi achi.

2. Berhampur loko bhaari "stylish" (forgive me for this, I was trying to stay afloat ;-) ) - Hollywood movie dekhanti, amara jaga naa praye sabu English re like Barracks, Urban Bank Rd, Gate Bazaar, Victoria Market, Church Road.

3. Aama rickshaw bhaari comfy. I still stand by it!

Doomsday was when Berhampur Municipal Gym. lost to Govt. Press of Cuttack in the Faiyaz Memorial Trophy finals, 2-1. Rmbr. that?

Omkar, Naresh and Arun --you guys are real Berhampur afficonados --remembering all these little chides and jibes on Berhampur till this day.
My favourite line on Berhampur, which I narrate across audiences in India, is Berhampur is the only town in India that has sent a President and a Prime Minister associated with it --VV Giri and Narasimha Rao.

Speaking of Berhampur and VV Giri --remember the Giri jokes:
Wife fell: BV Giri
Favorite Hollywood star: Giri Giri Peck

Omkar I remember that match! We were together i think - you, Bhabani, Ratilal and me. We used to buy in advance a set of tickets that would cover the entire tournament. Right? It was great fun. Any match and we would have our team decided in advance whom we would support. The Municipal Gym team was our fav.
Btw Fai, I am sure you never had to buy tickets, right?

Fai was/is alive and it couldn't have been his memorial. If memory serves me rt, it was in the memory of his grandpa, rt Faiyaz?

Municipal Gym Team:
Goalie - Kumar Shah (Bodokhemundi Raja pua)
Full Back - Papa, No. 10
???? - fill in the blanks

Hated the Katki teams - Jaya Durga & Govt. Press (solid teams though)

Loved the Walteru teams. Secretly wished they would beat Cuttack and we (BAM) would then beat them. There used to be teams from Calcutta and Jamshedpur too.

My mom was an avid Cuttack fan, simply because she hailed from there, even after having married my dad since 1939, go figure ;-)

Yes it was named after my Grandpa
Fieaz (Phaej in Oriya) and I used to sneak inside BAM's Old Trafford without paying since the folks at the Gates knew me.
Dad used to buy tickets for himself though!
Municipal Gym Goalie Kumar - Bodokhemendi Roja ro puo had a heart attach about 7/8 years back and is no more. He was married to Lulu Apa who used to stay at Chandra Prabha Street. He was an ace Goal Keeper of his era and I still remember some of his awesome dives and saves.
There were two brothers Ramo Patro, Lokhono Patro and Ramesh Uncle officiating the entire tournament (Referee and two Linesmen)
I seriously wonder if Matches were fixed then?

Tas,
Guy talk, foraying into soccer tournaments that used to be held in BAM.

I had gone to see only one football tournament with my father in the stadium opposite Khallikot College.Didn't much enjoy it. Guess because it was a "guy" thing.

Hilu and Vimal

Let me digress a bit. While on cricket recall we had the Kendriya Vidyalaya team versus SVC. Manoj chaudhury who was with us shifted to KVV midway ( like Arun to BHUB).

I don't recall who, but Manoj was the wicket-keeper from KVV who received an awesome bang on his right eye ( courtesy his paceman friend from KVV) and ended up with a 'Blue bloated forehead '.

I was 5th or 6th down in the batting line up with ' Big hits ' to ramp up the score in the middle. But was unsteady with an eternal motto - Bajile gola no hele Rourkela ' However sometimes could jack up the score board !

Suresh Rathod used to open the batting line up ( A diminutive GAVASKAR in the mold ).

Vim,
Yes I recall - we must have been sitting in "Green Stand". Ah, those free flowing witty comments.

Faiyaz,
I guess no match fixing as Mun. Gym. never ever won the championship. That match against Govt. Press was the closest. Yes, I rmbr. Ramesh the referee and of course the pretty pretty Lulu Apa.

Tas,
Yes, thats "Old Trafford" all right.

Naresh,
Yes rmbr. the incident, MKC and I became very good friends later on (and are to this day). He's in Ranchi now (no, not because of that ;-) ).
Ah cricket yes. Nari and I used to be opening bowlers, but bat I couldn't (Arun and Joydeep, 1 yr. my seniors used to laugh (sledge?) when I would come in to bat ay 8/9 down). I did something about it, but thats outside the scope of this blog, if u know what I mean.

Naresh: I remember that match. Poor Manoj. That was quite bad.
