We were planning this meeting since August. Finally, two and a half months later it materialised in a restaurant near Haji Ali. The years had taken a toll. The childhood effervesence, the dreams of youth, the career centric pangs of middle ages were all behind us. We had traversed quite a distance from St. Vincents.
Vimal, with no pretence in his persona seemed to be someone who accepted and even invited time unlike others who spend time defying or fighting it. Ageing gracefully with a silver blond hairstyle, in real life, he looks so unlike the dark photo that pops up every time you want to scribble a comment on the blog. As we hugged each other the vast expanse of three and a half decades melted, re-uniting us in a strong bond of nostalgia-soaked shared childhood.
For someone whose family business was in making ice he sure new how to break it!
We agreed on the menu in a jiffy. The reason being ( I realised later) both of us had spent a few years in Delhi. There is a very high probability that a Delhite is bound to order Tandoori chicken, tandoori roti, dal tadka and no rice. That’s exactly what we ordered. On the sweet dish front we differed. I ordered for phirni (served in a kullahad). Vimal did not argue. But after a polite helping of phirni he called the waiter and ordered for caramel custard. Yummy! I did not regret his decision either.
Vimal came through as a person whose biggest wealth is his down-to-earth simplicity and sincerity. St. Vincents is an institution he almost worships. When he talks about Sister Roslie or Miss Brenda there is a reverence in his voice which is 24 carat pure. When he talks about Mrs. Feroze Ali or enquires about my parents well-being you realise that one just cannot emulate him- his brand of humanism is either ingrained in the genes or just not there. When he feels that as a writer I have not realised my potential he says it with a concern that touches a chord. When he talks about his attempts to get more people on to the blog and how some of them ignored his pleas, he makes a genuine effort to hide the hurt by saying saab log apnee apnee duniya mein busy hain.
We talked about Stanely and the way he re-invented himself,
about Louis and his beautiful family,
about Tasneem and her bubbly child-like enthusiasm and simplicity,
about Sarita and her charming beauty,
about Nargis’s books and looks and her likely return to the blog,
about Faiyaz and Faiyazisms,
about the bold and beautiful Alps and Aashu,
about Vinita and her commitment to Intelligent Pune,
about the potential of Naresh to write beautiful english,
about how he has still not given up on Henry returning to the blog,
about how Hilu joined in,
about how Shankar and Reena will be joining in soon,
about the failed attempts at reaching out to Debashis Panda and Joydeep Nayak,
about, about about …. just about everything.
Time flew and we had to rush back to our offices. We hugged each other again. As a parting shot Vimal said, “ Don’t ever stop writing.”
Like Khaled Hosseini’s Kite runner I too thought- For Vimal and his blog:
“A thousand times over.”

Arun, you have been very generous with your praise. You served it twice by mistake… thank you.
Folks, it was great meeting Arun. I am sure I would not have had recognized him had I just bumped into him elsewhere. I reached the designated spot a minute or two earlier so I was on the look out. Scanning across the road to see if I could spot a figure whose body language was different than the crowd around. And there we spotted each other when he was on the divider crossing over. We smiled and for once that distance of few mts and those 15 seconds to cross over seemed like time was not moving fast enough.
We spent close to an hour together which just got over in a jiffy. I wish the restaurant where we met served “time”.
Arun’s smile is still the same… like the bulb flash in earlier cameras – the intensity can blind and the after glow remains for some time. It was wonderful catching up. There was a lot that we shared. We touched upon a bit of everything. Thanx Arun… difficult for me to express my feelings in words…
God has been very kind with me. Apart from a great family, a wonderful organization where I currently work - including the place where I worked earlier - He has now gone out of his way to help me connect with my school friends who matter to me so much. Thank you God, thank you for everything…
Guys
I am now bereft and ' missing ' the Ice cream ' Whisky '.
Kudos to Vimal for the ' Phantasmagoria' he has created - which captures all the multifaceted miasma ( sorry , no pollution intended ) and projects them equally.
I sincerely feel all of us should produce, direct , lyricise, act in a ' Mega Banner ' of our very own.
You have the characters , the sentiment, the anger, the ecstasy, the feeling of oneness, the derision and why not the catharsis and culmination into a full length' Movie '.
The money ' Moghuls' are you listening ? { Trans-nationals ) Vimal pls do give me the role of a Side Kick !
Why didn't u'll call me over? i live in just nearby Pune - forgot?
The sentiments felt by both of you is almost palpable.
Lucky guys.
I'm J.
Read your Tere Mere Milan Ki yey Raina!!
Kya bataoon Arun?
O Main to Hil Gaya,
Koi Mil gaya
Mil hi gaya, Mil gaya!!
Honestly, after reading your Post, Main to Hil gaya!
Arun, I loved your parting shot... a la Hassan style.
Very moving.
Arun and Vim.........
Right guys! Life mein whatever 'busy'ness we undertake, we should make it a point to continue writing in this poignant Postcard. Even if it is once in a way.
That was a momentous meet alright! And so sensitively narrated. Lets take a vow right now- NEVER to graduate to higher levels. I mean...we can branch out but lets also see that the SVC roots remain firmly entrenched. At least now we have a place to keep on nurturing it. Thanks to Vim the Maali!
Btw..Naresh, you said you'll be in Bam on 10th and 11th. Of which month? TOmorrow I'm going again to spend Idd with mummy. Will be there for two days:-}

Nargis
Its in Oct 08 . Id Mubarak ho ! also to your MOM, family members, Faiyaz bhai, Tasneem , Nigar and who else do we have ??
Trust I am not wrong, the last day is known as Iftaar ??
I love all those delicacies , had a friend during my 12 year stint at New Delhi , whom we used to visit. Laccha was the favourite ! fine strands of vermicelli in immensely dense milk bordering on 'Khoya ' interspersed with Raisins ( bigger type - imports from Kabul ) and Cashew as well.
Maybe I should have preponed my trip to be a part of Iftaar !
Allah Malik !
After a long day in the naxalited infested hinterland of Jharkhand i came back to Ranchi just now. one look at all your comments and my tiredness has vanished!
Hope many of us will get time to catch up.
Tasneem, as a writer I had two options for the parting shot.
the other one is also worth repeating.
It is a Javed Akhtar classic from Deewar, " Hum dono ek doosre se kitne alag kyon na ho jayeen, hamara bachpan kabhi alag nahin hoga."
Udaya: Not a bad idea - Arun, Smita and I can come over to Pune. Alp from Sangli. Ashu and u are there - 6 of us can actually meet on a short notice!! Kya??
What a meeting --and what a cascade of emotions and memories --Haji Ali is a place of miracles --the miracle is that time stood still as two wonderful Vincentians met.....
