Glimpses of Cuttack

Friends, Romans, Kotokis
Here are a few pictures I've taken at Cuttack in mid-Feb. I'd gone to BBSR to attend a family wedding, but Arun's blogs on CTC inspired me to visit that place. Most of all, I wanted to see the Railway Station, as I'd missed seeing the exterior facade since the time I left Cuttack (as all my visits were by bus/car from BBSR). The above pic depicts a sea change from what it was during my days- I still remember that narrow road with limited parking. The other pics are from different places in Cuttack---I bet Arun can recognise most of them.
During my stay, I had the privelege of talking to Nargis (thanks a lot Nargis for your hubby's offer for an EQ Rly ticket) and Sarita. Unfortunately I could not meet up with them, as the meet planned by Indira at Nargis's place did not materialise. Even Anu could not come to the family wedding.
But I did visit Indira and stayed at her mansion in Cuttack--and her husband, Kaushik gave me a good treat at the Cuttack Club bar---a place I used to frequent so often with my dad. Will give a detailed write-up later.
Pardon the poor formatting of the pics---I am posting multiple pics for the first time!
Cheerio!

Naresh, that is the Christ Collegiate School on Mission Road---it is not far from Stewart School and Sailabala Women's college.

Great pics, Venu, esp of CTC Stn.
Fai, that one liner was superb!

Thanks Tasneem. I wonder how Cuttack still has that old-world charm, especially Tulsipur, Mission Road and Cantonment Road.
How I wish I could go back there and enjoy that laid back life!!

On the contrary, I do remember cursing that place as a kid, saying 'nothing happens in this darn place except Bali Jatra and tournaments in the stadium.

How opinions change with age!!

great pictures venu. the station looks great but Naresh there is no Ravenshaw College in these pictures, however I do recognise Stewart College. Mahanadi looks gorgeous and reminds me of the hours and hours i spent there swimming and just roaming in those islands.

Hey Arun,
That shot of River Mahanadi is just behind Sanat Mishra's house--had dropped in to meet his dad.
I did not take pics of Ravenshaw because somebody else already posted a pic on this blog.

Most of the pics are from Mission Road, and that gorgeous house at the top right was my house till we shifted in 1969 to Cantonment Road.

Nostalgic pics. The Gourishankar park was another magnetic spot for chaats, kachoris and phuchka.Last time I visited there,I saw additions of Chinese and Juice stalls, and all shifted towards the Ravenshaw Girls school. One thing for sure, Cuttack has now got good Bengali meethai dukaano!!

Oh I forgot...it was lovely talking to you and your bro. Next time you guys (including Indira)must make it a point to meet :-}

gourishankar park is in choudhury bazar on yor way towards nayasarak, the famous silver filligree area. If your saadi baraat would have gone from cuttack your car would have been the first one to be decked with flowers from the then choudhury bazaar " phoolo patti ". At present the place is identified because of the Big Bazaar mall.

Mohatarrama Nargis

Nice to have u back after a long hiatus. Wanted to address you as DIDI but again restrained , it reminds me of that German comedy show enacted by a person of that name !!

Where are your voluminous stuff ??

Hey Nargis,
Thanks for your help in BBSR---it's a pity we could not meet. Certainly next time.
We had a good time with Faiyaz this morning, and it was great catching up with the old times.

I mentioned that Indira fondly remembers walking to your house with Anu on her way back home from school, opening your Allwyn fridge, and stuffing ice into her socks. She asked if the fridge is still there.

Banhi--thanks for the clarification. I've got the location now. It's nice to hear names like Chowdury Bazaar and Naya Sarak after so many decades. Haven't traversed on that route though, since 1975.
