Sancheta, Sanjukta Barik, A K Patnaik, Enarkay, ? Pani
Standing Raja, Rabi Dora, Sauri Padhi XX

The PG Depts Badminton Team of 1978. Though Sancheta and me are from SVC, I am not sure about Souri. I think we won the inter collegiate that year and some of us were selected for the inter varsity also. There was no indoor court at Bam except one near the Rly station built courtesy Sri P S Rao, a badminton enthusiast of the Railways . I wonder if things have improved now.

Hey I can recognize Sancheta...her sis Sushmita was my classmate :-}

Btw NRK....in every photo of yours you have to have a XXX tag. Poor fellow- can nobody identify him? Is he the same XXX guy from the bathing beauties picture?

Four standout features:

* Enarkay's bell-bottom. My guess is 40 inhes.

* All girls and definitely Sancheta seem to be Jaya Bhaduri fans when she was guddi or was with Vijaya Anand when he sang the mera jeevan kora kagaz song.

* Your professor: his moustache and chasme ka frame also reminds me of Utpal Dutt.

* The guy in the black shirt in the back row. He must have been the amir khan of khalikote college

Overall a great pix of the by-gone era.Like bhoole bisrey geet this qualifies to be a bhooley bisrey dost. Enarkay, why don't you try to get Sancheta into the blog?

Nargis- the guy in this photo is Suma The one in the bathing beauties can be identified by Venu who was his classmate He was a 'dada' in BBSR then
Vimal- you may be knowing Sancheta,s number and we can all try to get her on the blog

Sancheyta Chowdhury was my class mate too. I spoke to her when I was in Mumbai last.
Extremely nice and a pleasing personality...
she lives in Balasore these days.

Sauri Kant Padhi was initially studying in St Vincents and then took a transfer to Central School Kendriya Vidyalaya, He is with the Indian Armed Forces, I suppose.

Where's Raja these days?
I've watched Raja n Rabi Dora play badminton many a times.

NRK was a treat to watch..
EnarKay aur Kanoon key haath bahut lambey hotey thay!

O'Suma!! The most sought after person in the world?

Faiyaz-thanks for the info about Sauri. Suma was our most sought after college peon. Raja is in Hydrabad and Dora in Delhi. I picked up the game of Badminton in Cuttack Club and our house where we used to play. Sanat Misra(late- God bless his soul) was my friend and doubles partner and we played the Nationals for Orissa in 73-74 as Juniors( our captain then was the inimitable Roman Ghosh) and also won many state level tourneys together.

Extremeley Sorry to hear about Sanat Misra, I remember him often wearing a white cotton Sports T shirt chewing Pan and officiating B'minton Matches.

Arun is right - A K Patnaik resembles Utpal Dutt - Hey wait a minute! I think he looks a lot like Susanta Chowdury too ( Sancheyta/Sushmita/Smita's brother)

AB- bell bottoms were a rage back then. I am sure all the guys in the back row were in bell-bottoms too.
Spoke to Susanta Choudhury just now.Vimal did try to get him on the blog once and so did I but he seems busy with his coaching centre though he said he does go through our blog.

enarkay,

I would request you to kindly go thru my blog on bell bottoms etc. in the month of sept.2008. I made that comment only in the context of that write-up.

If you don't mind i suggest you and susanta can once meet over lunch/dinner post that pix and then win him over to the blog.

Arun,
Went through your post. It was a neat take on fashion during those halcyon days. You are right, all guys in the pix and even our Prof tried to look fashionable. Look at the hairstyles including Suma's and Dora's belt etc
Will try your suggestion on Susant soon

Did you ever run into an Alok Agarwal? He was 2 yrs. my senior at REC, Rourkela, quite a badminton player, represented REC, RKL.

Yours truly, like in many other sports could only be good enough for the class team in badminton. Did play against Alok, and got beat in the intra-murals.

Cant recollect Alok, but Subrat Misra (Sanat's bro) who is also from REC and my senior at Stewart School used to play with us.Our seniors in badminton at Cuttack were Anupam Patro, Sriharsha Routray,Bose brothers, Iqbalbhai and others. We used to play mostly at Cuttack Club

Arun
The streets of Berhampur were spic and span in the 70s, thanks to the bell-bottom trousers!

Venu, oh yes there are many such hilarious recollections about the bell bottom era. Do you remember the sanjay gandhi inspired admin/police swinging into action with scissors on the road clipping off long hairs and cutting the bell bottom flares.

Enarkay said...

Arun, Sanjay Gandhis brigade went about clipping mare than bell bottom flares and long hair!!! ha ha!
The bells used to cost more with special double stitching and extra cloth, but they were easy to get into and out of without help from brothers/ cousins.
As Venu says they kept the streets clean but all the dirt came home and we had to wash them frequently

arun bhatt said...

yo ho ho hoo! so obsessed i was with the long hairs and huge flares that i actually forgot the 'big' story of sanjay gandhi's population control measures.

Bingo Arun, you've hit the nail on the head.
