It must be lovely being fair!

You know, the fetish that we Indian folks have with fair(er) skin - its time to look at it from a new angle.

First, the context. So, there is this Mexican family that come to help us clean the house, have remarked that when they watch Indian TV (of course at our house, and we have Zee, TV Asia, Sony etc.), they say they notice that the actors are light skinned. As compared to "mango" Indians, that they see (Sarita, I'm gonna catch up to your English Madam Sahiba ;-) ). I might add here that, Saloni is an exception that proves the rule, as the show starts out by victimising her, skin color being one of the factors.

Then there is that "Fair and Lovely" cream. And a plethora of such products being advertsied over the "desi" channels. At any rate, the point here is not to deride or rationalize this trait of ours. If its so, so be it. As imitation is known as the sincerest form of flattery, its hard to "preach" that "its OK to be dark(er)" when the whole country does a wink-wink and practices otherwise. Have u read a matrimonial column lately? ;-) I rest my case.

Point? (Do I have to have one?) If u thought I gave a rat's a-- about this, guess again. Just stirring up our dormant blog ;-)

I was touring in Chicago one weekend and the young girl who was serving me at the McDonald's counter exclaimed "Wow, what a beautiful tan! Where did you get it from?"

People here pay to acquire our colour and many in our culture would pay anything to acquire their colour.

I remember the generous amounts of "Snow" & "Powder" that we were all treated to when we were young. Now, I have a limitless supply of snow powder in Regina but I do not want any!

Ever looked at Michael Jackson's pictures from when he was a different colour - don't you all agree he looked much more handsome than in his re-incarnation.

Moral of the story - "the grass is greener..."

THE "dusky INDIAN beauty"? Anyone that I know? ;-)

IIRC, "hum kaale hain ..." was butt-ugly Mehmood. But loved his comedy.

Snaps, right on.

Fair skin colour attractive ? People should see them without the make-ups (including men !). Always thought the dusky hair colour attracted more.....Essex blondes & Scandinavians being the most sought after.....and for men, colour of hair represents maturity.....fairer the better !!
