My Ladies Bicycle...

Back in 70's very few girls rode bicycles in Berhampur. I was one of the only 2 girls who used to come to school on a cycle. The other girl was called Saroja. I think she was in our school for about 2 years. She used to ride a gents' cycle and I had a ladies' one without the rod. I remember some of the boys used my cycle during the recess time to bring HW books which they forgot at home.

Once Miss Mabel, I think she was our class teacher in std VI, asked me to come to school at 4 pm (our school hours ended at 1 pm). I did not know the reason and was scared to ask for one. I was wondering if she would punish me or give me an extra class. I reached at 4 pm sharp. The school was empty. I parked the cycle under the guava tree(where we usually parked). I saw Miss Mabel, Miss Mary and few more teachers standing near the staff room. They did not call me and instead they came to me. That was very unusual. They asked for the cycle key and you know what ....all of them enjoyed the cycle ride...each one riding at a time. Uffff...I was relaxed and enjoyed seeing them having fun for almost an hour. I think having a ladies' cycle did the trick. They thanked me. Now I cherish the moment. If Miss Mabel was reading the blog I am sure she would remember.

Ms Mabel was renowned for her braided hair , kissing her toes ! Makes me remind of the Garnier Fructis ad where the girl lifts an article with it.

We need to figure out where Miss Mabel Vincent is. She was beauty personified. Smiled occasionally, sharp, wore a sari where skirts were the norm, and had a unique stance, of leaning backward against the teacher's desk with arms folded. I can go on & on ...

Hi Lakshmi,
You got Brenda's name right as well as all the boys in your class. The names you missed out are Joydeep Nayak, Afshan Taher, Gita Kar. There are plenty of photographs of Miss Brenda in this blog.

By the way you blog well. Do keep writing. Thanks for getting in touch through FB. We will plan a mini reunion soon.
