A Post-Room called Vimal

It is that time of the year -- the heat and dust across India --sluggish haze of ennui all over --punkahwallas dozing off --TV channels, all showing the same crap ---children, spouses and books (as the case may be) strewn across the floor --or, empty nest looking more emptier --anyways, and then you lazily stroll through the world wide web into a Post-room called Vimal, into a room full of memories of what summers used to be in that SVC-ian era of Berhampur, Flashback time .......
Dacca Sweets and singaras; spicy dosas in Vaikunth Bhaavan; Caramel Custard in Girija Restaurant; Sunday drives to Gopalpur-on-Sea; the evening walkabouts through Urban Bank Road; all those morning shows of Western films at Vijaya Talkies; Chhoko addas at Girija Squares; those cashew-topped, coconut-grated Lassis at Murthys; and the cheering of Meenakshi's dives at Faiyaz Tournament football matches at Khallikote College grounds; not to forget, the fun-filled Cobra Cricket matches ( the Berhampur Premier League, genesis of IPL, where players from all over India played like one happy family, without the luxury of cheerleaders); and the muted , unrequited pangs of romance (spurred on by Lata, Rafi and Mukesh songs of the 60's)-- all under the starry skies of Berhampur.........................

And then the doorbell rang --an Airtel bill -- and the spell was broken.

Jyoti Talkies, Utkal Cinema, SSVT (Sri Sitaram Vilas Talkies) next to Ramalingam Tank and Vijaya Talkies. I just realsied that since Vijaya Talkies was owned by someone from the south - If not if would have been spelt as Bijaya talkies!
Although berhampurias called it Bijya Cinema!
Kaun jaane FA Cup or Cone?
Stan, have you heard of the world famous Stanley Cup?

Hey Stan, those were indeed a vivid recollection of life at BAM in the golden years.

I guess NRK and you have covered almost everything. I can add a few however---' cycling to Gopalpur gate and watching a 5 NP Coin expand under a passing train's wheels, reading the 'Weekly Sun' for free at Raja paan shop @ Girija chokko while sipping on Murty's lassi and chewing ghantia, etc, etc'

Reading it for free at Raja's Pan shop was fun --free , it was assumed -- I mean, the mags literally dangled in your face ....

Well folks not to forget.. The ' Bagho nacho'during ' Ammavaru sambaralu '. Colourful skinned characters from various epics . Dressed up like ' Zombies '. Knicker clad rickshawallahs sporting a Rajesh khanna hair cut, the rickshaw itself decked in colorful upholstery , plastic streamers dangling from the handles, shiny mirrors on both the sides .. aping a motorcycle.

The rickshawallah constantly gazing into the shiny mirrors ensuring that his hair cut stays intact, while he speeds up non-chalantly thru the maze of people , and I sit and shudder when would the ultimate denoument come .. colliding onto the incoming rickshaw !!!
