Truly an almanac. But elementary..patience required to sift thru details.
venu,
wealth of info. actually when i posted the pix of samaja building i had done some elelmentary research on the history of journalism in orissa. the asha press of berhampur featured prominently.
in fact according to some reports the first english weekly of orissa was published from berhampur from the asha press.this press also led the movement of uniting the southern province of orissa with orissa which was under madras presidency.
was surprised to learn that gandhiji visited berhampur twice.
"---was surprised to learn that gandhiji visited berhampur twice"
Me too, dude, me too!
No, the details above indicate that Gandhiji visited Berhampur not one, not twice, but thrice...in 1921, 1927 and 1946.
We have a hat-trick there!
Berhampuria, don't sound too terribly bad no more, eh?
But seriously, I have "heard" (and hence can't prove) that Netaji was kept in the Berhampur jail, for a few days.
Also it produced a Prez. amongst many other things.
I rmbr. dad talking about the 1946 visit of Bapu.
Not too shabby, I say, for a town that does not have too much visibility in the national panorama.
Wow - Incredible stuff!
